In other parts of the site you'll read that I'm not too comfortable with the
fact that Microsoft software runs so many cash points and other public
information systems these days.
I used to work above a bank in the centre of Sheffield, and on a very
regular basis their cashpoint outside was out of order. On occasion,
the screen could be watched as the Windows NT 4 operating system would
continually reboot by itself, before staff had chance to cover it up
with an 'out of order' notice.
On other occasions, I've seen the advertising displays throughout the Meadowhall (Meadowhell) shopping centre dead, showing the infamous blue screen of death.
Funnily enough, even Bill Gates is routinely embarassed by his software's reliability. More information about the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show here.

British consumers have double standards when it comes to ethical
purchasing, claims Microsoft. According to YouGov research commissioned
by the company, 89 per cent of the population believe themselves to be
ethically-driven consumers, buying fair trade coffee and organic
produce for example, but nevertheless 43 per cent own goods or material
they know to be counterfeit, and 23 per cent have knowingly bought
pirate software. Er, so?
